Astronomy Today News

Astronomy today is a serious science as well as a hobby enjoyed by many people. With old and new discoveries, space missions, current events, videos and photos, astronomy is a hobby that can fill countless hours. It’s a lot of fun too. Let’s get right to the newest in astronomy.

On any day meteors are a key element of astronomy today for that day. 2008 certainly was no different. Meteor swarms such as the Taurids in Leonids were quite active in November. The Gemenids had their peak in mid December, but unfortunately during a full moon phase that would make them difficult to see. Don’t fret. Meteor showers can continue for as long as four weeks. So people can still see the amazing view.

In 2008 a return to the moon was on people’s minds very often in astronomy today. Many countries would participate in this exciting undertaking. The goal may be to establish a moon base or even a colony on the moon. Imagine that. Space 1999, a TV show from the 70s, may be about to become a reality.

Space garbage, a used up tank, was often discussed when people talked about astronomy today. Its long orbit had finally decayed to the point it would fall to Earth. There was some worry that large chunks would fall, or that some parts would strike in populated areas. But it broke up into very small pieces which mostly fell into the ocean near Australia.

The good old Hubble telescope made the biggest impact in astronomy today. Damaged in October it was finally repaired his temper. Then the Hubble took the first ever visible light image of a planet orbiting another star. Talk about a hard year’s work.
