Can you get a virus connecting to a neighbor’s router? He has no passwordd so I can connect to it freely. Is it okay to continue to do this? I have my own dsl line but i only connect my other laptop to the neighbor’s router via wireless. Can it get a virus?

I have an account for xbxo live that I received from a friend and I wish to connect to xbox live through my laptop and a wireless hotspot. I do not own the router myself and it is physically impossible for me to connect directly to it. However, I am receiving a signal for internet and I have a eternet port on my laptop. Yet, when I tried to connect to xbox live it failed and said that my gateway was not responding to a network request. Could somebody please tell me how I am to do this? Moreover, I am not very computer oriented, so if you would, could you explain it in terms that I might under stand. Thank you for any support.

I have an ethernet cable that I am connecting with. Do I have to use something other than that?
